For the first time ever we can now download audiobooks for the same price and in the same way that we download songs.

The stories, read by actors like Timothy West, Clive Francis and Harriet Walter, range from ten minutes to two hours in length and are well-suited to people who haven’t time for a six hour novel. And with downloads selling for pennies Spoken Ink represents a serious shift in the sale of recorded literature, which until now has been priced at the same level as books.

The enterprise launches with a powerful collection of short stories from best-selling authors, including Ian McEwan, Margaret Atwood, Roald Dahl, Angela Carter, Haruki Murakami and Peter Carey alongside a number of up-and-coming writers and much loved classics. The launch of the audio short story site comes at a time when poetry and short stories are becoming increasingly popular with the public.

Listeners can download the stories to their computers and then transfer them to any Mp3 listening device, including Cds and mobile phones. Stories can be downloaded on a pay per story basis, from 99p. There is also a subscription package of £3.99 a month for which members receive an ‘inkpot’ of four downloadable stories.

Spoken Ink is backed by the Arts Council and has hosted a number of critically-acclaimed live storytelling events in and around London.
