Vasily Grossman (1905 - 1964) was a Ukranian Jew and hero of the Soviet Union. In the inter-war years he worked as an engineer and then committed himself full time to writing. During the Second World War his mother was murdered by the Nazis and he joined the Red Army at the front, where he served with distinction and wrote for the Red Army Newspaper. However, in the 1950s his relationship with the Soviet Union. Attempts to cover up the extent of the holocaust disgusted him. His great novel LIFE AND FATE was deeply critical of the Soviet Union and is compared in scope to WAR AND PEACE. If you wish to get some measure of his wonderful writing try his short story IN KISLOVODSK.
