The oldest long poem in Old English, written about 1000 AD, Beowulf tells the story of a great warrior in Southern Scandinavia in both youth and maturity.

In the first three of six parts in this lively modern translation, the hero Beowulf does battle with Grendel, the monster of the watery places and, not knowing what lurks beneath, swims into the dark water of the cave.
