Humphrey Carpenter
Humphrey Carpenter (1946-2005) was a noted biographer, author and broadcaster, who was born, lived, and died in Oxford. He wrote many biographies including those of Tolkein and Spike Milligan, as well as the very popular Mr Majeika series of children’s books. The Oxford Companion to Children’s Literature, written with his wife, is a standard source of reference.
As a jazz musician, he formed a band called “Vile Bodies”, which had a residency at the Ritz Hotel for many years.
