"El licenciado Vidriera" is perhaps the most representative of the twelve Cervantes so called "Exemplary novels" (Novelas ejemplares) and, in many ways, a happy, brief and enjoyable precedent of "Don Quixote". This short novel, published in 1613, is about Tomas Rodaja, who relates his journeys through different cities in Italy. Due to a strange disease, he believes that his body is made of glass and can be broken into a thousand pieces. "El Licenciado Vidriera" has been classified as a realist novel because of its description of characters and situations. It also serves as a collection of useful and moral teachings. "Licenciado vidriera" has also become a phrase describing someone excessively timid or delicate.
